Robert Lewandowski managed to beat Lionel Messi in the 2021 FIFA Best Player award. This was his second title in a row.
FIFA announced the award for the best male player on Tuesday (18/1/2022) early morning WIB. Lewandowski became the winner after eliminating Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah as the best three nominees.
The Bayern Munich and Poland striker picked up the FIFA Men’s Player of the Year Award last year, beating Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the award.
Since then, the 33-year-old has almost never lost his goal-scoring form. He managed to score 51 goals in 45 games for club and country during 2021
He helped Bayern win the FIFA Club World Cup in February 2021. Die Roten went on to win the Bundesliga title in the same year.
Lewandowski also holds the Bundesliga record by scoring 41 goals in 29 games. The former Borussia Dortmund striker surpassed Gerd Muller’s record, which was 40 goals in 34 games during the 1971/72 season.
He also scored eight goals in 12 qualifying games to help Poland to the World Cup play-offs in Qatar December. Poland will have to face Russia.
“Thank you very much. I am very honored to win this trophy and feel proud. I know it belongs to my team-mates and my coach too. We all work hard to win games. It is very special to work with the people around me,” said Lewandowski.
“I never dreamed of breaking that record (Gerd Muller). To score 41 in 29 games – if you had asked me a few years ago if it was possible I would have told you it’s impossible. I also told him thank you He’s set a lot of records and for me it’s always the next step to try and break them.”
