BVB is eliminated from the DFB Cup. The defeat at St. Pauli is deserved because Dortmund can’t find any solutions. A season without a title threatens for Borussia. Coach Marco Rose sees recurring mistakes. He doesn’t seem to have a solution yet.

Erling Haaland was frustrated. The BVB striker gesticulated wildly and clearly showed his teammates how he wanted the ball to be placed. But even in the last ten minutes of the round of 16 in the DFB Cup, Dortmund were unable to stage the Norwegian.

Haaland’s frustration grew with every minute. After the final whistle, the 20-year-old stomped angrily into the cabin. BVB made a fool of themselves at FC St. Pauli, the 2-1 draw at the second division club sealed the end of the DFB Cup. It was a deserved defeat, because although BVB was overwhelmingly superior, they didn’t create any clear chances against Hamburg, who defended well. After Haaland’s goal, which sunk a hand penalty in the 58th minute, Dortmund were no longer dangerous in front of St. Pauli’s goal.

“Today was a bad day. It’s extremely bitter to be eliminated here. Should we give up now? We have to let this sink in now. We missed a huge opportunity to win the trophy again this year. It’s just very, very bitter,” said BVB captain Marco Reus.

After Bayern lost in the second round (5-0 at Borussia Mönchengladbach), winning the DFB Cup this year seemed easier than it had been for a long time. But Dortmund didn’t manage to convert their superiority into chances and goals. The team didn’t even launch angry attacks in the closing stages.

Rose only brings Moukoko in the 90th minute

Amazing: Dortmund’s Marco Rose only made an offensive change in the 90th minute when central defender Axel took Witsel off and brought in another striker in Youssoufa Moukoko. Previously, the coach only swapped positions and replaced one defender (Manuel Akanji) for another (Dan-Axel Zagadou) in the 76th minute when the score was 1:2.

“We didn’t start the cup night the way you should start a cup night. In the first 15 minutes we get ourselves into trouble. The core topic is: how do you start a cup fight as a defending champion at FC St. Pauli? We’ve been a bit headless here and there,” Rose said.

BVB did not accept the fight and also left a great chance for the title because of a too lax attitude, which Rose criticized. “It’s just a shame and a bit stupid that we’re using these clichés again. We wanted to take the next step. I remind you that Bayern Munich has already been eliminated,” said Rose. It’s a pity that his team didn’t step up after the games against Frankfurt and Freiburg: “That’s exactly our issue, that we don’t start a series that sometimes goes over seven, eight, nine games. The finite nature of the competition makes it particularly bitter.”

St. Pauli striker Guido Burgstaller analyzed the big surprise in a surprisingly matter-of-fact manner: “We wanted to play along from the start. We fought it off passionately, in the second half BVB didn’t have the greatest chances.”
