The Romanian Simona Halep is in the round of 16 after a gala. The two-time Grand Slam tournament winner didn’t give Danka Kovincic from Montenegro the slightest chance and won 6: 2, 6: 1. Halep now faces France’s AlizĂ© Cornet, who beat Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The second seeded Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus had to bite more and had to make up a set deficit in the 4: 6, 6: 3, 6: 1 against the Czech Marketa Vondrousova.
In the round of 16, Sabalenka now has to deal with the Estonian Kaia Kanepi, who has slipped to position 115 in the world rankings and who, at the age of 36, is in the round of 16 of the Australian Open for the first time. This was thanks to a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 win against Australian wildcard player Maddison Inglis.
Meanwhile, the number seven seeded Pole Iga Swiatek has easily made it into the round of 16: 6: 2, 6: 3 against Darja Kassatkina from Russia.
