Coach and former basketball player Jim Forbes, 69, died Friday morning from complications caused by COVID-19, the virus kept him hospitalized since December 31, 2021.

Jim Forbes’ major accomplishments include: a silver medal at the 1972 Olympics, former UTEP player selected by the Chicago Bulls, over 600 wins in his coaching career, UTEP Athletic Hall of Fame, plus the only coach in the modern era to lead two schools to the state semi-finals (Riverside and Andress).
Coach Forbes had a very large positive impact on the El Paso community as a trainer and educator, this was expressed through numerous messages posted on social networks.

“Coach Forbes’ love for his students, players, the game and the entire Andress High community will be sorely missed, he was a great leader and mentor to the entire El Paso community,” said Andress High School Principal Joseph Manago.
Finally, it was announced that the life and legacy of Coach Forbes will be honored during the Andress varsity basketball game at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, basketball games throughout El Paso are expected to hold a moment of silence in his memory.
