Basketball was everything in the life of Jose Luis Saez, president of the federation (FEB) from 2004 to the first months of 2016. Twelve years plagued with successes on and off the pitch that have ended with an indelible stain in the form of conviction. one year in jail for a continuing crime of misappropriation and a fine of 3,375 euros, in addition to a civil liability of around 118,000 euros. Bitter ending that allows him to avoid prison and face the next few years with the peace of mind of living away from the courts, which he has been pending almost every day since the scandal that ended his career as a leader broke out in 2015.
A complaint addressed to the Higher Sports Council, chaired at the time by Michael Cardinal, led to an external audit of the FEB accounts in which evidence of crime appeared. Alleged misappropriation that the leader has ended up admitting a few days ago, accepting a sentence of one year in prison and a fine of four and a half months at a rate of 25 euros per day. This reaffirms the agreement led by the Prosecutor’s Office, to which the Federation also finally joined. Initially, Anti-corruption asked for four years in prison for the Extremaduran and an indemnity of 136,885 euros that should have gone to the FEB for having charged personal expenses to the entity.
According to the audit, Sáez would have paid with the federation card for products unrelated to his activity as president, such as private meals, drinks, cigars and trips, among other concepts.
Along with him was also accused the former economic director of the FEB, Luis Gimenez Martinez, for which the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor requested a year and nine months in prison and a fine of six months at a rate of 50 euros per day and that has finally ended up accepting a sentence of six months in prison and 2,250 euros of administrative sanction.
The two defendants went earlier this week to the Provincial Court of Madrid to acknowledge the facts, a condition required by law for the agreement with the Prosecutor to be accepted, putting an end to a six-year nightmare that began shortly after Eurobasket 2015.
In all this time, José Luis Sáez has lived away from the media, focused on the defense of an innocence that has not been able to prove globally. “Today I made the most important decision of my life. I have fought as far as my strength has been able. My family, my health and my friends recommended a way out of a loop that was consuming me. I have chosen to live. Starting tomorrow I want to fill in the blank canvas of my life, “the former leader acknowledged on his social networks shortly after accepting his sentence.
