FC Barcelona, transfer news: Ex-Chelsea star Oscar confirms Barca interest

Oscar has been playing in China for over five years now. A transfer to FC Barcelona could possibly be an issue in the near future.

Former Brazil international Oscar has confirmed that FC Barcelona have expressed an interest in signing.

“Barcelona contacted my agent to explore the possibilities,” said the former Chelsea star, who plays for Shanghai Port in China TNT Sports. Oscar is under contract at Shanghai until the end of 2024 and the 30-year-old midfielder stressed that he is aware of Barcelona’s financial difficulties.

“I was informed of interest”

“I was informed of the interest and I think they are currently trying to find a way. Barca are currently having problems registering new players and they still have to negotiate with my club,” said Oscar.

Most recently, Ferran Torres also had to wait until Barcelona could register him for LaLiga. The Spaniard switched from Manchester City to the Catalans for 55 million euros and has now made his debut for the new club.

Oscar would have to give up a lot of money for Barca transfer

In the Chinese league, games will be suspended until March, according to Oscar, a loan until the end of the season would also be an option. “It’s nice to see that such a big club is interested in you,” he said. “But we haven’t had any talks yet. If Barcelona aren’t able to register new players, it doesn’t make sense. Barca are trying to arrange something, so maybe we can work something out together with my agent.”

In any case, Oscar would have to be willing to accept large salary losses. At Shanghai, he is currently said to be earning the equivalent of almost 650,000 euros a week – a sum that Barca could never raise amidst the acute financial problems. “I’m aware that I would probably have to give up something to make a transfer happen,” said Oscar.

The 2014 World Cup participant switched from Chelsea to China in early 2017 for 60 million euros. Oscar managed five goals and 16 assists in 25 competitive appearances for Shanghai last season.
