In the second semi-final in Melbourne on Friday, the Russian number two in the tennis world beat Greek world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas 7: 6 (7: 5), 4: 6, 6: 4, 6: 1. The Greek had defeated Jannik Sinner in three sets in the previous round. Mevedev had also won against Tsitsipas in the semifinals at the Australian Open 2021, but then missed the title against Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic.
In the first semi-final, Spaniard Rafael Nadal defeated Italian Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The 35-year-old can win his 21st Grand Slam title with a final success on Sunday (9.30 a.m.CET) over Medvedev and thus become the sole record winner in the four most important tournaments.

However, Medvedev often didn’t have his emotions under control in the semi-finals and kept fighting with the audience. The spectators in Melbourne were more on the side of Tsitsipas. Medvedev also messed with the referee in the second set.

The 25-year-old Russian complained about what he considered to be illegal coaching by Apostolos Tsitsipas, Stefanos’ father and coach. He was right, too, but the nature of Medvedev’s criticism was questionable. The man from Moscow just got too emotional and personal. However – and you have to give him credit for that – Medvedev apologized for his freak out after the game.
