For many he was the “Franz Beckenbauer of the East”, a real football legend – now Hans-Jürgen “Dixie” Dörner has died. His lawyer announced that the three-time GDR footballer of the year died at the age of 70 after a long, serious illness.
100 international matches for the former GDR, five championship titles and four cup wins between 1971 and 1985 have made “Dixie” Dörner an icon.
The career of the native of Görlitz began in 1967 when he was delegated to the football academy of SG Dynamo Dresden. After making his debut in the first team as a striker in 1968, he landed early on in the libero position, which he later shaped like no other. Numerous national cups and 68 appearances in the European Cup for Dynamo followed. Dörner remembered some titles particularly fondly.

“The double of championship and cup victory in 1971 was one of the best moments of my career, because that’s when everything started,” says Dörner, who also won gold at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. But there were also low points. “In 1985 we had won the first leg against Uerdingen 2-0 in the European Cup and led 3-1 in the second leg. In the end we lost 7-3 and were eliminated, which was very bitter,” says Dörner, who suffered from jaundice during the event of the 1974 World Cup.
After the end of his career on May 24, 1986, Dörner was initially a youth coach at Dynamo before he oversaw the East German Olympic squad from 1988 to 1990. Until 1996 he worked as a youth coach for the German Football Association (DFB). This was followed by positions at Werder Bremen, Al Ahly Cairo and the state league club Radebeuler BC. However, the great success did not materialize.
