German team has to do without Kühn

THEWithout Julius Kühn, who tested positive for the corona virus, the German national handball team has to play the other preliminary round games at the European Championship. As the German Handball Federation (DHB) announced on Saturday evening, the test on the backcourt player in the morning gave a positive result. According to the association, the 28-year-old has been vaccinated three times and is symptom-free. Kühn went into isolation in the evening after the result became known.

“We hope that Julius doesn’t get sick now. We are in the process of doing the rapid tests for everyone. At Julius, a quick test was negative afterwards,” said DHB sports director Axel Kromer in Bratislava.

This means that national coach Alfred Gislason not only has to do without Kühn this Sunday (6 p.m./ in the FAZ live ticker for the handball championship and on ARD) against Austria, but also in the last preliminary round game on Tuesday against Poland. The German selection had won against Belarus by 33:29 on Friday. The 2016 European champion from MT Melsungen scored six goals and was one of the top scorers.

France also wins second game

Meanwhile, handball Olympic champion France has also won the second European Championship game and is about to advance to the main round. The record world champion outclassed the Ukraine by 36:23 (17:11) on Saturday evening in Szeged, Hungary, and can plan for the hot tournament phase with a clear conscience.

With five goals, Dylan Nahi was the most successful thrower for the French, who surprisingly lost their dress rehearsal for the European Championship last Sunday (34:35). At the start, France and its top star Nikola Karabatic had prevailed in a heated duel 27:22 against Croatia, second in the European Championship.
