Giants and Stars qualify for the Dominican baseball final

SAN FRANCISCO DE MACORÍS.- The Cibao Giants beat the Licey Tigers 4-3 in the match corresponding to the 16th round robin game of the winter autumn baseball tournament.

With their victory, the Giants (10-6) assured, for the second tournament in a row, their classification for the final series. The Tigers (7-9) still aspire to achieve the second place to dispute the crown.

El Licey scored his first run when Nomar Mazara led off the second inning with a home run over the right-field fence off Giants starter Gabriel Ynoa.

In the third they scored the second when they combined a single to Emilio Bonifacio’s central defender, who in a run-and-bat play, scored from the initial hit to Sergio Alcántara’s left field.

The Giants equalized in the closing of that inning against Tigers starter Brandon Lawson. After one out, José Siri hit the left and stole the second. Hanser Alberto was retired 6-3, but Henry Urrutia and Marcell Ozuna continued with RBI doubles.

The homeowners took the lead in the fifth inning. After one out, Siri walked and stole second. Alberto was hit on one hand. Rhiner Cruz came in to pitch for Lawson. Siri and Alberto executed a double steal before Urrutia drove them in with a double between left and center.

The Blues got closer in the sixth when they linked doubles from Yermín Mercedes and Dawel Lugo.

Jim Fuller (1-2) was the winning pitcher with one inning, one hit, one earned run, one walk and two strikeouts. Lawson (0-3) had the backhand while Juan Minaya got the save.

For the Giants, Henry Urrutia had a pair of doubles with three RBIs, Marcell Ozuna a double with an RBI, José Siri, Kelvin Gutiérrez, Juan Francisco, Moisés Sierra and Webster Rivas with a single each.

For the Tigres, Emilio Bonifacio, two hits, Nomar Mazara, home run, Yermín Mercedes and Dawel Lugo, double, Sergio Alcántara and Jorge Bonifacio, one single each.

SAN PEDRO DE MACORIS.- The Eastern Stars mounted two revolutions of four touchdowns and defeated, coming from behind, 11-4 the Águilas Cibaeñas, taking their direct pass to the final of the Dominican winter baseball championship, in front of their public, in the Tetelo Vargas stadium.

The Orientals had to come back, as the Eagles took the lead in the match, scoring four runs in the second inning, which came on RBI singles by Cristhian Adames and Deivy Grullon, and walks by Eric Filia and Jimmy Paredes.

The revolution of the greens began in the fifth chapter, scoring four rounds, standing out Jeremy Peña, with a two-run single and Robinson Canó, with an unstoppable producer of one, after two outs.

The game remained tied until the seventh inning, when the Elephants scored four more runs, led by Junior Lake’s one-run single and Yamaico Navarro’s two-run homer.

The uncontrollable bats of those led by Fernando Tatis, continued attacking in the eighth episode, in which they added three more lines, two of them by Abraham Almonte’s double.

The Stars, who own the championships of the years 1954, 1967-68 and 2018-19, will be in the 18th final in their history and will seek to win their second crown under the reins of Tatis, who was their leader in the last triumph of the team, which culminated with 50 waiting.

FINAL SERIES THIS MONDAY

The Stars and the Giants finished the semifinal tied with a 10-6 mark, but the Orientals won the series between them (3-2), so, according to league rules, the final will start this Monday at the Tetelo stadium. Vargas, from San Pedro de Macoris.
