The European Handball Championships in Hungary and Slovakia also start for the German selection on Friday. The DHB wants to cause a big surprise with a young team. The overview shows where you can see which games for free.

On Thursday, this year’s European Handball Championships began with a heated duel between the two top teams, Croatia and France. Until January 30th, 24 nations will fight for a place in the final in Budapest. The two host countries, Hungary and Slovakia, lost their opening encounters on the first day of the tournament.

On Friday, the German team will also start the 15th edition of the competition. At 6 p.m. Group D will play the first preliminary round against outsiders Belarus. After the career end of Uwe Gensheimer and Steffen Weinhold and the cancellation of numerous top performers, the European champion of 2004 and 2016 has to compete with a completely renewed team this year. According to national coach Alfred Gislason, the only goal is to reach the main round.

Venue raises security issues

A total of 24 European nations are taking part in the tournament. These are initially divided into six groups. After the group phase, the first and second place winners from groups A, B and C or D, E and F compete against each other in the main round. The top two in each group of six advance to the semi-finals. The third-placed teams meet in the match for 5th place.

The full ranks in the halls should make for an unusual sight. Access in Hungary is based on the 3G principle (vaccinated, recovered, tested). There is no viewer limit. In Slovakia, on the other hand, only a maximum hall utilization of 25 percent is permitted. This means that a maximum of 2,500 spectators are allowed in Bratislava, where Germany plays its preliminary round matches. Access is only possible with a certificate of vaccination or recovery.

ARD and ZDF show DHB games

As usual, the public broadcasters have secured the rights to the games of the German national team. While ARD shows the group stage matches against Belarus and Austria (January 16), ZDF will broadcast the last game of the group stage against Poland on January 18. Germany is the favorite in all games, but getting into the intermediate round is not a sure-fire success.

If the DHB selection succeeds, ARD will broadcast two games and ZDF two games. A semi-final with German participation would be broadcast by ARD. The final on January 30th will definitely be shown on ZDF. The preliminary round game between Croatia and France as well as the duel between the two German group opponents Belarus and Austria (18.01. 20:30) can also be seen in the ZDF media library. Here you will also find at least one game a day in a longer summary.

At ARD, moderator Alexander Bommes and former national player Dominik Klein lead through the program. Presenter Yorck Polus and experts Sven-Sören Christophersen and Markus Baur are on duty for ZDF.

18 more games on free TV

In addition to the public broadcasters, Eurosport also broadcasts 18 games of the European Championship on free TV. Uwe Semrau moderates, while world and European champion Pascal Hens classifies the events. If you don’t want to miss an encounter, you can’t avoid the paid offer from “Sportdeutschland.tv”. The streaming provider was able to secure Stefan Kretzschmar and Maik Thiele as tournament experts. A tournament pass is available for 12 euros, individual games can be purchased for 3.50 euros via the pay-per-view function.
