HSV coach Tim Walter is happy about the derby victory

When it was done, he looked forward to cooling off. Even before the derby, Tim Walter had pointed out the crate of beer that would always be in the coach’s cabin. Now he exulted: “My boys don’t drink that much, so I can drink one more.” He must have needed it after a game in which he went to the full on the sidelines.

Walter’s Wild Derby. Once again, the HSV coach was on the move as a border crosser, repeatedly quarreling with the fourth official and St. Pauli’s coaching team. “Shut up,” he yelled shortly before the change of sides in the direction of the St. Pauli bank.

After the break, the volcano continued to bubble. The result: referee Sascha Stegemann showed him a yellow card after 63 minutes. For Walter already the second within three days. Already on Tuesday, when he won the cup in Cologne, he was warned in extra time.

The 46-year-old later showed understanding. “Maybe the referee is right at that moment when I’m loud,” said the coach. “But I’m always respectful of everyone.” Well, yeah…

By the way: Walter is not yet threatened with a ban. Yesterday’s warning was his first in the league, only after four yellow cards would he have to watch a game in the stands. There’s still plenty of room for improvement, but he added with a wink: “I also have a very good assistant trainer team.”

HSV coach Walter is happy about the derby victory

For Walter, his outbursts of anger on the sidelines are a stress reliever, they should serve as a signal to his team. That worked yesterday. And what really sticks is that after Hannes Wolf in 2019, he is the first HSV coach to do so was able to celebrate a victory in the city derby. That was previously denied to Dieter Hecking and Daniel Thioune. “We’re delighted,” said Walter. “But there are only three points for that, too.” However, the emotional value of this success is immeasurable.
