Midfielder Andras Schäfer (22) should strengthen the iron in the future. The Hungarian international (15 appearances/three goals) Dunajska Streda/Slovakia is on loan, Union secures a purchase option.
German football fans may be familiar with Schäfer. At last summer’s European Championships he scored Hungary’s 2-1 win over Germany, bringing Germany to the brink of elimination (final score 2-2).
What can shepherd do?
The German Marcus Jahn (35) once coached Schäfer in the U18 and U19 Hungary and describes the “eighth” as follows: “He was my captain at the time. Andras is a strong tackle player with a lot of passion and emotions that you don’t really notice off the field, because he seems introverted. He grasps things very quickly where others still have to think. A down-to-earth person – hardworking, focused, an absolute team player who is good for every team.”

Jahn is convinced: “With the family environment at Union, it will be a successful partnership. I congratulate Union that such a gem, such a central midfielder, has chosen Berlin.”
Schäfer will compete with Levan Öztunali and Genki Haraguchi for a place in attacking midfield.
