Jeff Fisher to fill final USFL head coaching vacancy

Former Titans and Rams coach joins Larry Fedora, who worked at North Carolina, to coach the new football league

Former NFL head coach, Jeff Fisher, and former North Carolina coach, Larry Fedora, were appointed coaches for the teams of the USFL this Thursday, filling the last two vacancies in the league.

Fisher was named head coach of the Michigan Panthers Y Fedora will direct the New Orleans Breakers.

The list of other eight-team league head coaches includes Todd Haley (Tampa Bay Bandits), Kevin Sumlin (Houston Gamblers), Mike Riley (New Jersey Generals), Skip Holtz (Birmingham Stallions), Kirby Wilson (Pittsburgh Maulers) and Bart Andrus (Philadelphia Stars).

Fisher, 63, was an NFL head coach for 22 seasons with the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans Y St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams. Had a record 173-165-1 Y led the Titans to the Super Bowl after the 1999 season. He last managed in the NFL in 2016 with the Rams.

Fedora, 59, had a 79-62 record in 11 seasons at Southern Miss and North Carolina. He last managed in 2018 with the Tar Heels.

The USFL newly reformed announced earlier this week that the league will play all of its games in Birmingham, Alabama, this season.

The eight-team league, owned by Fox Sports, will debut on April 16 with the Birmingham Stallions taking on the New Jersey Generals.

Training camps begin March 21 after a player selection meeting. Each team will use 38-player rosters with seven practice squad members. Each player will receive a base payout and be eligible for bonuses for winning.

From 1983 to 1985, the USFL original played games in the spring before closing operations.
