Joan Laporta establishes an astonishing salary cap

This is perhaps a first for a big European team. If the total wage bill of the Spanish clubs – with Barça at the top of the list – is already controlled very closely by the financial fair play of La Liga, now Joan Laporta wants to put in place an internal solution, in order to avoid the excesses and the big contracts signed in recent years, which have partly led the club to the untenable financial situation in which it bathes today.

Thus, the boss of the Catalan formation made a big decision according to Sport : there will be a salary cap of 10 million euros net per year. No recruit can be signed with a higher salary, even if the media indicates that it will be possible to include certain bonuses and variables to attract stars, such as Erling Haaland for example. But regarding the pure salary, there will be no exception.

Many of the team’s players could not have been recruited!

A decision which is likely to limit the Barcelonans on the transfer window, but which is intended to be beneficial for the club in the medium to long term, at least in the eyes of the management. Today, however, there are several of them who receive this salary, with Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho, currently on loan, and respectively at 21 and 12 million euros net.

Players like Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Ousmane Dembélé are above that 10 million, just like Gerard Pique was before agreeing to lower his salary. Suffice to say that Barça’s room for maneuver will be limited and much lower than what other big European clubs can offer for the best players on the planet.
