The 26-year-old Keys experienced her first tournament triumph since August 2019, when she won in Cincinnati. The US Open finalist from 2017 then played the final only the year before last in Brisbane, where she lost to Karolína Plíšková.
In the first round of the Australian Open, Keys will run into another compatriot, 2020 champion Sofia Keninova.
In the men’s final, the home team Thanasi Kokkinakis managed 6: 7, 7: 6 and 6: 3 with Arthur Rinderknech from France and won the first title in his career. The 25-year-old Australian succeeded on his second attempt – in 2017 he lost in the final in Los Cabos.
Murray couldn’t beat the number one
Aslan Karacev, the first seed, succeeded in the men’s final. The 28-year-old Russian recorded his third career title after winning twice 6: 3 over former world number one Andy Murray from the UK.
Thirty-four-year-old Murray, who fell to the top 100 due to protracted hip problems, appeared in the finals after more than two years. The three-time grand slam winner won the last title in October 2019 in Antwerp, with a total of 46 tournament triumphs.
