The Malaysian national team has officially appointed Kim Pan-gon as the new coach. The South Korean man once kicked Shin Tae-yong from the coach’s chair Taeguk Warriors.
The announcement of the appointment of Kim Pan-gon was delivered by the Malaysian Football Federation (FAM), Friday (21/1/2022). The 52-year-old tactician was appointed to replace Tan Cheng Hoe, who resigned after the 2020 AFF Cup.
Pan-gon previously served as Head of the South Korean Football Association (KFA) Coach Selection Committee since 2017. The former Ulsan Hyundai player has also coached the Hong Kong national team in 2012-2017.
Citing South Korean media reports Chosun, Pan-gon made various achievements for the senior national team and U-23 while serving at KFA. He is regarded as South Korea’s savior from the crisis after the failure at the 2018 World Cup.
Kim Pan-gon decided to replace the then South Korean coach, Shin Tae-yong, with Paulo Bento. Shin Tae-yong then accepted the offer to coach the Indonesian national team in 2019.
Pan-gon had expressed his views when he was partly responsible for ejecting Shin Tae-yong from the South Korean national team. He said it was the best decision for him Taeguk Warriors.
On the one hand, Pan-gon acknowledged the achievements of Shin Tae-yong who was able to bring South Korea to beat Germany 2-0 at the 2018 World Cup. He also praised the 51-year-old coach as an excellent leader.
“I prefer to defend Shin Tae-yong. I didn’t get any support, but I did my best,” said Kim Pan-gon in an interview with Chosun in 2018.
“Meanwhile, the success of defeating Germany must be highly evaluated. He is a leader who can do great things in the future,” he said of Shin Tae-Yong.
