Like Wout van Aert: Eli Iserbyt performs a one-man show in France | Cyclocross World Cup 2021

World Cup leader Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) has staged a demonstration in the penultimate moto. In Flamanville he was lord and master. Toon Aerts finished second on the castle grounds in France, almost 1 minute from the winner.

The broad summary:

Iserbyt performs one-man show after Aerts mistake

In the absence of the great tenors, Eli Iserbyt wanted to give his overall win in the World Cup some extra shine. Together with his red brigade of Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal, the 24-year-old rider immediately took matters into his own hands.

With also Van Kessel, Dubau and Aerts there was thus a leading group of 7. But when Aerts suddenly made a mistake in the third lap, Iserbyt resolutely chose to go down the road.

The World Cup leader did not look back and steadily increased his lead to half a minute. There was no longer any doubt about the winner around the castle of Flamanville.

Tactical tire choice makes Aerts ‘best of the rest’

So there was soon nothing to do in the front, but in the battle for second place classification competitors Aerts and Vanthourenhout provided the necessary spectacle.

In the end it was the drizzling rain that settled the argument in favor of Aerts. The Telenet-Baloise Lions rider had more grip on the increasingly slippery surface with his solid mud tires and eventually finished one minute behind the fourth Iserbyt.

Sweeck (4th) and Kuhn (5th) completed the top 5 in France.

Iserbyt never gets into trouble again in the slot and wins in Flamanville

Iserbyt: “Driving with a crowd gives it that little bit more”

Eli Iserbyt (1e): “If I can ride with an audience, I can do that little bit more. It was also a course that was tailor-made for me and I felt really good from the start. So I’m satisfied.”

“I knew I was not very bad, but now I have the good feeling. It is also good for the mental and hopefully I have now left for the World Cup.”

Toon Aerts (2nd): “Maybe it’s thanks to the tire choice that I finished 2nd today. Halfway through I changed my tires and two laps before the end I also got a new bike. I think I saved some energy in that area.

Eli (Iserbyt) was really strong today. He drove away from us quite easily, it seemed. I didn’t start very well today, but I’m happy with my second half of the race.”

Michael Vanthourenhout (3rd): “In the penultimate lap it started to rain and that had a major impact on the course. I still had to change, but Toon (Aerts) was already too far away. All in all I didn’t have enough surplus, so third was perhaps the highest achievement for me today.”
