losing his place as holder, a bad thing for a good for the Frenchie?

Substitute for three games, Killian Hayes is making his mark with the second unit of the Pistons and the result is rather promising. What if this new role was the ideal solution for the tricolor leader?

Hampered by a major hip injury during his rookie season, Killian Hayes hoped to take advantage of this second year to show his skills. Unfortunately, Kiki is unable to confirm his full potential for the moment and his coach, Dwane Casey, has decided to change his plans by removing the Frenchy from the starting five in favor of the more experienced Cory Joseph. If the veteran is thus rewarded for his good month of January, we were especially interested in the fate of Hayes and his new role in the team. The first good news is that his playing time is not decreasing compared to when he was titu ‘, so we are far from a loss of confidence on the part of the staff. The other good news is that the player seems released with the substitutes. Far from the projos of the starting five and the cohabitation with Cade Cunningham on the backcourt, Killian Hayes gains in responsibilities with the second unit and he can have more control of the ball and organize the game. Tonight against Orlando, Kiki had a good game, establishing himself as the leader of Detroit’s revolt before the break. Always as serious defensively and passing, he also showed more aggressiveness in attack, as evidenced by these six passages on the throw line (career record). A sample certainly limited but which convinced the staff and Casey, who is satisfied with the results of this experiment. Words transcribed by Omari Sankofa II of Detroit Free Press.

“I think he’s more relaxed. He plays with a little more confidence, he’s more in control and he talks more. He doesn’t question who he or Cade should handle the game. Cory has more experience in this area and plays more relaxed. That’s why I think right now it fits well. » […]

“I like the way he is playing now. He is comfortable. Defensively, he still defends well. We are going to look at this rotation and experiment with it for now. »

We had already mentioned it at the start of the season but the complementarity between Killian and Cade was a big debate and the need for each to have the ball in hand risked limiting the impact of the second, especially since none are really known for shining in catch-and-shoot (33% of the parking lot for Cunningham, 29% for Hayes). A more shooter profile like Cory Joseph (45% by far this year!) suddenly seems more logical next to Cade and it offers a real creative role for Kiki with the players on the bench, thus allowing him to gain confidence and to quietly continue its development without pressure. Who knows, and if this release of the five was the best news of the season for the former Cholet?

Killian Hayes has lost his starting spot for three games and things are not going so badly. An extended role off the bench, more possessions with the ball in hand, increased confidence, that seems pretty promising to us for the rest of that. We are now waiting for confirmation!
