A serious knee injury almost ended the career of top judo talent Marlene Hunger. A tear in the inner ligament caused complications and great pain. Ultimately, however, the protégé of legendary coach Adi Zeltner returned to competitive sport after an eight-month break and immediately secured the bronze medal again at the Military World Championships in Brétigny-sur-Orge, France.
“I had a good start to 2021 and was able to get permission to start my first Grand Slam tournament, but then I had to take a break until October due to my knee injury,” says the 21-year-old from JC Wimpassing at the trophy presentation in the office Sports Councilor Jochen Danninger their ordeal. “The fact that my comeback at the Military World Championships ended in third place makes me really proud!”
A knee injury in judo is always problematic, but Hunger in particular was feared for her strong leg technique in competition even before her injury. “But the knee joint is under extreme stress, which is why this injury was such a big problem,” she explains.
At the Military World Championships, Hunger fought his way back to the semi-finals without any problems. Only in this was the final stop against the 31-year-old Audrey Tcheuméo, who was already world and European champion. In the bronze fight, on the other hand, hunger made the decision in their favor after a few seconds. After this success, she also prevailed in the NV athletes’ choice in October.
