Masks light up the stands at the Australian Open: three expelled after fight between fans

The masks were the reason for an altercation that lit up the stands at the Australian Open. When the match between Alexander Zverev and Daniel Altmaier was played, valid for the first round of the tournament, a group of fans got into a fight over the non-use of chinstraps. Security must have intervened, expelling three of the fans who refused to use them during the tennis match.

As reported by one of the journalists from The Washington Post, it all started when shouts began to be heard in the sports venue that encouraged not to wear a face mask, with phrases such as “masks do not work.” The response from those who oppose this idea came immediately, sparking a conflict that was promptly resolved.

After that, members of the security team went to the place of the fight and asked the fans who refused to wear masks to leave the Rod Laver Arena, while a large part of the stadium applauded that they left the place.

When the situation was just beginning, voices were also heard giving their support to Novak Djokovic. The Serbian tennis player, number one in the world, could not participate in the competition, after being deported from Australia for not being vaccinated against Covid-19.

As for sports, Zverev won 7(7)-6(3), 6-1 and 7(7)-6(1) over Altamaier.
