According to media reports, Max Eberl plans to resign from Borussia Mönchengladbach. As reported by Sky and “Bild”, among others, the sports director wants to leave the foals in the summer at the latest. According to “Sport1”, a departure is even possible this winter after the transfer period. On Thursday he is also said to have summoned the management team of the team. Possibly to announce his departure. There is no confirmation from the club yet.

Nevertheless, the “Bild” already brings up possible successors for Eberl: Ex-Gladbach coach Dieter Hecking and ex-professional Martin Stranzl, who could therefore take over as a duo. Small catch: Hecking is currently sports director at the second division club Nuremberg, would have to get out of this contract first. According to information from “Sky”, Schalke sports director Rouven-Schröder is also someone who could soon work for Gladbach.

What is explosive for Eberl is that Gladbach’s President Königs does not want to release him according to information from “Bild” and has probably given him on the way that after leaving Gladbach he will not be allowed to take over any other Bundesliga club for a year.

Eberl still has a contract until 2026

Eberl is an instance in Gladbach. He has been with Borussia since 1999. First as a player, then as a youth coordinator and since 2008 as sports director. His contract is actually valid until 2026. According to Sky, he should now plan a break before intervening elsewhere. Last year Eberl went on vacation in winter to recharge his batteries. The club bosses allegedly want to let the contract rest in order to generate a fee in the event of a change.

Eberl took over Gladbach in 2008 as a club that moved between the Bundesliga relegation zone and the promotion zone of the 2nd Bundesliga. The 48-year-old brought calm and consistency to the club. He also reached the Champions League several times.

Gladbach in Not

Recently, however, the much-praised Eberl also came under criticism. Because under coach Adi Hütter, who was hired for a lot of money, Borussia slipped into the lower half of the table and, despite a strong squad and less pressure than the competition playing in Europe, is in 12th place with 22 points after 20 match days.

In addition, there were discussions about the free transfers of Matthias Ginter and Denis Zakaria. Eberl was recently ill, so he did not take up a public position and kept Hütter in office. He’ll have to make a statement soon.
