After total knee damage: Moussa Wagué back on the training ground

More than a year after his dramatic knee injury, there are the first pictures showing Moussa Wagué back on the training ground. As announced by FC Barcelona, the right-back completed parts of his rehabilitation training away from the team on Monday – great news after the Senegalese suffered an injury in December 2020 that could even have ended his career.

In mid-December 2020, Wague played on loan in Greece at PAOK Saloniki, the defender tried one in the league game against Aris Saloniki Ball on the goal line – in the process he hit the post, twisting his knee and sustaining a horrible injury. Wagué suffered a ruptured patellar tendon and torn lateral, posterior and anterior cruciate ligaments in his right knee.

Wagué promptly returned to Barcelona and underwent surgery at his home club, after which Barça said he was out of action for nine months. 13 months have finally passed before Wagué was able to do practice sessions on the pitch again for the first time after his total knee damage.

Barça lend Wagué to Nice and Thessaloniki

FC Barcelona had signed right-back talent Wagué in the summer of 2018 at the age of 19 from KAS Eupen for five million euros for the second team Barça B. After a season at Barça B, where he made 20 appearances in Spain’s third division, he was promoted to the first team under ex-coach Ernesto Valverde. However, he only made six (short) appearances here. He couldn’t really draw attention to himself, so Barça loaned him to OGC Nice in winter 2020 with an option to buy, but the French didn’t take it.

So Barça looked for a buyer again the following summer and found them in PAOK Saloniki, again on loan. With the Greeks, Wagué was also about to establish himself as a regular player and even played in the Europa League. But then came the tragic injury that could even have ended Wagué’s career. Now the Senegalese is finally back on the pitch after a long period of suffering and is working on his comeback.
