NORMAN – The No. 24 Oklahoma men’s tennis team swept its season-opening competition Saturday, shutting out Incarnate Word and Bryant, each by a score of 7-0, at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
“Our guys got a lot of confidence today,” head coach Nick Crowell said. “From the first match to the second, we played a lot better as we continued to play. We got a lot of the nerves out the first match. I thought we played a much more compete match in the second one, but both teams came in here and fought hard. A lot of our guys got four wins today in the singles and doubles so it was good.”
The Sooners started the day by winning all three courts in doubles competition against Cardinals. Pair Welsh Hotard and Alex Martinez remained in control the duration of the set, defeating Marwin Kralemann and Rafal Bednarczuk, 6-3 at the No. 1 line. Mason Beiler and Nathan Han clinched the doubles point for OU, defeating Amau Miralles and Noah De Luna, 6-2, in the three spot. Mark Mandlik and Baptiste Anselmo played out court two, finishing with a 6-4 win over Joao Sasso and Warren Fulgenzi Jr.
In singles action, Martinez was the first Sooner off the court with a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Miralles on court three. Han finished next for OU, defeating Fulgenzi Jr., 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot. Junior Mandlik clinched the contest when he defeated Pietro Perego 7-6 (2), 6-4 at the two spot.
The remaining courts played out. Hotard defeated Sasso 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 on court six, while No. 31 Beiler downed Marwin Kralemann 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 at the top spot. Justin Schlageter completed the sweep against Bednarczuk 7-5, 6-4 on court four.
In the Bryant match, OU once again claimed the doubles point to start the match. Hotard and Martinez earned the first win against Teague Burger and Nick Lorenz 6-2 on court one. Han and Beiler downed Diego Trejo and Aryaan Sen 6-2 at the No. 3 spot to clinch the point. The remaining court played out and Mandlik and Schlageter came out on top against Marcus Macaulay and J-C Baril, 6-4.
Hotard was the first Sooner to finish his match, defeating Andrew Pregel 6-0, 6-1 on court six. Schlageter continued OU’s momentum, tallying a 6-2, 6-0 win on court four over Leonardo Mileikowsky. Martinez clinched the match for the Sooners’ earning a 6-3, 6-1 in at the top line over Nick Lorenz.
Anselmo earned a win over Sepehr Raissi, 6-0, 6-2 on court three, while Mandlik defeated Burger, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. Han closed out the day for OU, defeating Grant Pertile 6-1, 6-2 on court five.
