The Spanish Rafael Nadal managed to prevail this Sunday to the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino after a 28-minute tiebreak and will play the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion needed all his experience and determination to earn a 7-6 (16/14), 6-2, 6-2 win at Rod Laver Arena and reach the Round of 16.
Nadal, seeded sixth, will face Canadian Denis Shapovalov (N.14) in the quarterfinals.
“I was a bit lucky at the end of the tiebreak, I had my chances but then he had a lot too,” Nadal said.
Nadal aspires to win his 21st Grand Slam, which would be a record, after a 2021 season marked by a chronic foot injury and the coronavirus.
In the women’s draw, the Spanish Paula Badosa fell to the American Madison Keys, in a duel between two of the best prepared players of the season.
