Nigeria and Egypt won the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon on Wednesday, placing themselves among the top 16 teams in the tournament. In the Group D match, Nigeria beat Guinea-Bissau 2: 0 (0: 0) in Garua. Umars Sadiks scored for Nigeria in the 56th minute, and William Trust-Ekong stood out in the 75th minute.
In the second game of the group in Yaoundé, Egypt beat Sudan 1: 0 (1: 0). In the 35th minute, Mohamed Abdelmonem scored. These results also meant that neither Sudan nor Guinea-Bissau could enter the playoffs and that Cape Verde and Malawi would be the third place winners in their playoffs.
Meanwhile, it became clear on Wednesday night that Tunisia’s preparations for the last group match against Gambia on Thursday would be hampered by the sending of 12 footballers in self-isolation due to Covid-19. The national football federation reports on its Facebook account that 16 of the 28 players attended the training on Wednesday.
After three rounds of play, Nigeria finished with nine points, Egypt with six points and Sudan and Guinea-Bissau. The final tournament features 24 national teams divided into six subgroups of four teams each. The two best teams in each subgroup, as well as the four best third place winners, will enter the elimination tournament.
The African Football Confederation (CAF) has decided that the spread of Covid-19 will limit the number of fans in the stadiums. Housewives in Cameroon can attend up to 80 percent of the stadium’s capacity, while other matches can be attended by up to 60 percent of the stadium’s capacity.
The African Cup of Nations (African Championship) takes place in Cameroon from 9 January to 6 February. The championship was supposed to take place last summer, but it was postponed to this winter and retained its title of “2021 Africa Cup of Nations.” Algeria won the final tournament in Egypt in 2019, beating Senegal 1: 0 in the title match.
