Official! Tottenham vs Arsenal postponed

Jakarta

The Premier League has officially postponed the Tottenham Hotspur vs Arsenal match this weekend. They approved the application for postponement of the match from The Gunners.

As previously reported, Arsenal proposed to postpone the match on Friday (1/14/2022) local time. The match at the Tottenham Hotspur headquarters itself should have been held on Sunday (16/1) evening WIB.

The request was submitted by Arsenal because they were experiencing a player crisis. Cannon London lost a number of players due to COVID-19, injuries, and some represented the national team at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Arsenal’s move reportedly had made Tottenham Hotspur angry. They accused this of being just a trick to avoid competing with a mediocre squad and not purely caused by COVID-19.

However, the Premier League decided to accept Arsenal’s request to postpone the match.

“Following a request from Arsenal, the Premier League board met today and it is with a heavy heart that it has been agreed to postpone the club’s away game against Tottenham,” the Premier League operator said in a statement.

“With Arsenal having less than the number of players required for the match (13 outfield players and 1 goalkeeper), the board of directors accepts the club’s application.”

The Premier League said it accepted the application because Arsenal were in crisis due to a combination of COVID-19, injuries and the absence of players due to international duty. “Clubs are welcome to apply for a postponement if COVID-19 infection is a factor in the request,” said the Premier League.

The postponement of Tottenham vs Arsenal is the second in the 22nd week of the Premier League after Burnley vs Leicester City. Previously, 20 games had been postponed so far this season due to COVID-19.
