Pair of prospects who would be short stops with the Rockies

Uncertainty at shortstop is uncharted territory for Rockies. Troy Tulowitzki he held the position for nearly a decade, including a few seasons in which he was among the best position players in the sport. Colorado traded Tulowitzki to the Toronto Blue Jays in the middle of the 2015 campaign, but they had a well-respected replacement waiting in the wings.

the famed Trevor Story he burst onto the major league scene with six home runs in his first four MLB games in April 2016. Essentially from then on, the position was his:

Aside from a strikeout-fueled slump in his second season, Story offered solid production to more on both sides of the ball during his time in Denver. Colorado’s most recent Opening Day shortstop not named Tulowitzki or Story? Clint Barmes, in 2006.

For the first time in a while, the Roxes now have a real question mark at shortstop. The story hit free agency. The club has tagged him with a qualifying offer and expressed some hope in a meeting, but there is no indication that will happen. Assuming Story doesn’t return after the lockout, where could the Rockies go from here?

Unlike after Tulowitzki’s departure, Colorado doesn’t appear to have a minor league replacement ready to step in. Only two of the top 10 prospects in the farm system, according to Baseball America, are shortstops. One of them, the Venezuelan Ezequiel Tovar, is 20 years old and finished the 2021 campaign in Class A Alta.

The other, Dominican Adael Amador, is 18 years old and has yet to advance to full-season ball. So the Rockies will either need to move one of their current major leaguers up the defensive spectrum or replace Story off the shelf.
