Spanish tennis is in mourning today. William ‘Duck’ Alvarez, former player and former coach, died this Saturday at the age of 87, according to an official statement from the Emilio Sánchez Academy. The Colombian, famous mainly for his time as a coach, had some great Spanish figures on his hands, such as Emilio Sánchez Vicario and Sergio Casal.

«We regret the loss of William ‘Pato’ Álvarez, with whom the Academy had a special bond. Track 4 in his honor was and will always be our recognition of his great legacy,” the Barcelona academy reported.

«Creator of the current Spanish tennis training system», reads the motto of court 4 of the Emilio Sánchez Academy Bcn, in tribute to the figure of this coach, essential in the growth of Spanish tennis.

Jordi Burillo, Julián Alonso, Javier Sánchez Vicario, Francis Roig or Joan Balcells are also part of the list of players with whom he collaborated. And more recently he also participated in the formation of the British Andy Murray or the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.
