This year is the 11th consecutive year that the NBA league has held the NBA New Year celebration. While continuing the traditional celebration methods in previous years, more interesting, fun and meaningful activities will be held.
As part of the NBA’s caring action during the Lunar New Year, NBA China held youth basketball training camps, community basketball games, and Chinese New Year Village Basketball Carnivals in three counties in Chongqing and Hainan this month to engage with local people in a positive and healthy form of sports culture. On January 16, with the strong support of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, NBA Cares entered Heixi Middle School in Heixi Town, Qianjiang District, Chongqing City, and held a happy basketball carnival on the court donated to the school to welcome the Chinese New Year. The majestic gongs and drums of the students expressed their inner joy. The following basketball activities were guided by professional basketball coaches from NBA China. They learned basic dribbling, passing, defense and shooting skills through group training, and then a hundred students participated. The fun dribble relay game pushes basketball training to a climax. The students on the court actively dribbled and ran, and the students off the court cheered and cheered. The basketball court became a sea of joy and joy. The sound of basketball colliding with the ground and the children’s laughter came one after another. In the end, all the students joined hands and danced the joyful Tujia traditional hand-waving dance on the court.
The NBA Care Action also traveled long distances to bring the joy of basketball to Shisanzhai, Xiaonanhai Town, Qianjiang District. The crowd joins the basketball activities together. There was jubilation in the Tujia cottage and downstairs on stilted feet, basketball was playing in full swing, hand-waving dance with a strong Tujia style, Mao Gusi, an intangible cultural heritage, was sung, and Sichuan face-changing and martial arts were practiced. Sports culture and national traditions complement each other, men, women and children of all ages participate, and the Chinese New Year is welcomed in a healthy and festive manner.
In the second stop of this year, the NBA Care Action came to Ding’an County, Hainan Province. NBA Cares and Ding’an County are old friends. As early as 2017, the NBA Care Action donated a brand new basketball court to Lingyao Primary School in Lingkou Town, Ding’an County. Former NBA dunk king Jason Richardson also came to the school to play interactive games with the children. In 2020, the first stop of the NBA Cares New Year Thanksgiving Season started from Ding’an County. NBA legends Dikembe Mutombo and Alonzo Mourning even came to the scene to guide the students in basketball skills.
From the 22nd to the 23rd, in cooperation with the Hainan Youth Hope Foundation, NBA Cares held the finals of the Happy Basketball Carnival basketball game at Yanjiang Park and Fangjie Community in Ding’an County, two community courts donated by NBA Cares. After two weekends of competition, nearly 100 people in the folk basketball team finally decided the champion and runner-up. At the same time, they also held a three-point shooting contest and a skill challenge. On the side of the court surrounded by coconut trees, the intense competition attracted many people from the community to cheer on the local players. Celebrating the Spring Festival with basketball games has become an active and healthy way of life for the local people. Before the finals, the youth basketball training camp guided by NBA coaches also drove local youths’ love for basketball.
On January 24th, the NBA Care Action came to Qingping Village, Nada Town, Danzhou City, Hainan Province. In the morning, the activity room of the Qingping Village Committee was full of lanterns and festivals. The children in the village wrote Spring Festival couplets and cut window decorations together. , folk performances and other traditional cultural activities to celebrate the Spring Festival, and then the professional basketball coaches of NBA China explained the basic knowledge of basketball through interesting interaction, and answered the questions that children encountered when playing basketball one by one.
Next to the activity room is the basketball court donated by NBA Care Action. The coach leads the students to have fun basketball training. Under the careful guidance of the coach, the students quickly mastered the basics of basketball. They said that they will continue to practice basketball in the future, because basketball can not only strengthen the body, but also cultivate team spirit. The children’s basketball activities attracted many villagers to gather around. In the end, everyone used the local characteristic Danzhou tune to integrate the local atmosphere into the joy of welcoming the Chinese New Year.
In addition, NBA Cares will distribute Chinese New Year gifts to 11 rural school students in 9 provinces. NBA China will also provide teaching support for rural PE teachers who stand out in the lesson plan evaluation, and donate a variety of basketball equipment to the schools where the teachers work to help the development of rural physical education. Beginning on January 26, NBA China will display paintings on the theme of “Basketball Welcomes the Spring Festival” through its official social media accounts. The paintings are created by students from schools that have participated in the NBA Care Action to help them show their talents in the field of art.
