The implementation of umpires robots is just one step away from becoming a reality this season in the Major Leagues, because the Major League Baseball (MLB) has put its experiment into practice in the strike zone.
A statement was published on the MLB website in which employees are requested to operate the system they called Automated Ball-Strike, and that it will apply to the Albuquerque Isotopes, Charlotte Knights, El Paso Chihuahuas, Las Vegas Aviators, Oklahoma City Dodgers, Reno Aces, Round Rock Express, Sacramento River Cats, Salt Lake Bees, Sugar Land Skeeters and rainy Tacoma.
The first league to approve a computer determining strikes and balls was the Independent Atlantic League, and he did it for the first time in the July 2019 All-Star Game.
In 2020 it was not put into practice, as there were no minor leagues due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, last season robotic umpires were used in eight of the nine stadiums in the Southeast League.
The Major League Umpires Association agreed in the contract signed in 2020 that They will help use the robotic system in the Major Leagues.
