Serena Williams joins Sorare's board”>Sorare recruits Serena Williams, the tennis champion who has won 23 Grand Slam tournaments. The French start-up also counts footballers Antoine Griezmann, Gerard Piqué and Rio Ferdinand among its investors.

It’s a hell of a volley that Sorare has just slammed. The French start-up, which combines fantasy football and blockchain, is once again making an impression by announcing the arrival of tennis player Serena Williams as an advisor to its board of directors. “In her new role, Serena will provide guidance to the Board on a range of topics including developing Sorare’s relationships with athletes around the world, advising on Sorare’s strategies to grow into new categories sports, including women’s sports, as well as future impact initiatives to make Web3 more inclusive and diverse”, says Nicolas Julia, co-founder and CEO of the young company.

Married to Reddit co-creator Alexis Ohanian, who has also invested in Sorare, the 23-time Grand Slam champion is an accomplished businesswoman. She even launched her investment fund, Serena Ventures, in 2014.

Serena Williams isn’t the first big-name athlete to join the tricolor unicorn. Before her, footballers Antoine Griezmann, Gerard Piqué, Rio Ferdinand and André Schürrle, winner of the World Cup with Germany in 2014, invested in the company. Last September, Sorare, which achieved a turnover of 325 million dollars last year, had signed the biggest fundraiser of French Tech by raising 580 million euros.
