The question of the next European Ryder Cup captain will be decided in the coming hours and the highest scorer in the history of the Ryder Cup Spaniard Sergio Garcia has made no secret of his preference.
Since Lee Westwood withdrew from the list of postulants it is his compatriot the Englishman Luke Donald who seems best placed to succeed Padraig Harrington at the helm of Europe’s Ryder Cup squad in 2023.
Indeed Swede Henrik Stenson not ready to give up his commitments with Saudi International, the test supported by Saudi Arabian state funds, he no longer presents the profile of the ideal candidate.
He may seem a bit shy, a bit closed off, but he’s a wonderful man.
After Harrington’s praise last week, it’s Sergio Garcia’s turn to say that Luke Donald ticks all the boxes.
“He has good experience as a player and as a vice-captain. I’m sure he’s a great candidate and can do a great job if given the role. I can’t wait to see what will happen.”
Always on the winning side
Even if unlike the Irishman, Garcia is not part of the committee in charge of appointing his successor, the Spaniard’s voice carries and he knows well the personality of the one he considers his “friend”.
“He may seem a bit shy, a bit closed off, but he’s a wonderful man. He is quite funny. He has a good sense of humor and a big heart, these are important things to have not only as a captain but as a person.
A four-time Ryder Cup player, Donald has never tasted defeat as a team. His last participation dates from 2012 during the Miracle of Medinah.
