Soccer: Why next weekend is not a Bundesliga – Bundesliga

These two weeks are going to be very long now….

Hard times are coming to German football fans. Because between the 20th and 21st match day, the Bundesliga (and also the 2nd division) takes a 14-day break. In Germany and in the top European leagues, the ball is still and no referee will blow the whistle.

The reason: It’s international break! However: The national teams of Europe do not play any games either.

Why is that?

The simple background: Europe’s top leagues are taking a short break from the game to qualify for the World Cup on other continents. In addition, the decisive games of the Africa Cup of Nations are coming up in Africa.

These qualifying games were actually scheduled for August 31 to September 8, 2020, but were then replaced by an international game window from January 24 to February 1, 2022 due to the corona pandemic. But because UEFA still let the European teams play last summer, these countries are now taking a break.

But because the Bundesliga teams are obliged to release their national players for this unusual international break, the league is now going into the short rest period.

Means: While the German internationals can take a short breather, others still have to step in. Brazil, for example, competes in Ecuador with superstar Neymar (29), or Argentina in Chile.
