Victoria Azarenka won the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013 and was also the number 1 in the world for a time. But after the birth of her son in 2016, things went downhill for the Belarusian.
Azarenka broke up with her son’s father and became embroiled in a fierce legal battle for little Leo’s custody. She even put a stop to her career to focus on that battle.
Those vicissitudes are now behind us and since then Azarenka has been trying to reconnect with the high peaks of yesteryear, with varying degrees of success.
In any case, Azarenka seems to be on track at her beloved Australian Open. In the 3rd round she wasted little energy today on Elina Svitolina, the number 17 in the world. Azarenka only allowed her opponent 2 games, under the watchful eye of son Leo.
Afterwards, he stole the show at the press conference with flashy sunglasses on mother’s lap. And he got the laughs on his hand when a journalist wanted to know what he thought of his mom’s performance. “Awesome, great”, it sounded decidedly.
“It is a privilege to have him here with me,” Azarenka said of her son. “These moments are priceless to me. It’s incredible to be able to share such moments with Leo.”
Azarenka is clearly feeling good again. Her next opponent, Roland Garros laureate Barbora Krejcikova, has already been warned.
