Cleveland. The Cleveland Guardians have reached a contract extension to continue playing in their current downtown stadium through 2036 and to make improvements to the park, owner and CEO Paul Dolan said Tuesday.
Team officials say they have obtained financing to renovate Progressive Field, the stadium that opened in 1994. The cost of the improvements is estimated at $200 million. The renovation works will start after the 2022 campaign.
“We are confident that this agreement will create a more engaging experience for fans and keep the facility modern and relevant for years to come,” Dolan said in the statement.
The Cleveland City and Cuyahoga County Councils previously approved the deal. The city and county contributed a total of $17 million. Ohio contributed $2 million and equipment $10 million for the year to pay for improvements and absorb costs for repairs, maintenance, operations and property taxes.
The deal could extend another 10 years to 2046, team officials said.
