On Monday evening at least 8 people died and about 50 were injured in the crowd that created outside the “Paul Biya” stadium in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, before the football match between Cameroon and Comoros valid for the round of 16 of the Cup of Africa, the continental tournament of African professional football. The match was played anyway and ended 2-1 for Cameroon.
The circumstances surrounding the crowd are not yet clear, and the Cameroonian authorities have only said that it took place outside the southern entrance of the Yaoundé stadium. The facility, where the main matches of the Africa Cup take place, has a maximum capacity of 60 thousand spectators which has been limited to 60 percent due to the coronavirus pandemic: when Cameroon plays, however, the capacity is raised up to to 80 percent.
