The event, sponsored by Olga Parres, recognized twelve athletes and teams, and a new date was announced for the Sansilvestre
The emotion, that inevitable feeling that always surrounds the Alaban Sports Awards, was once again present in the fifth edition of these awards. Gone are dozens of names that already know what it means to receive this recognition from Dombenite society, from their closest environment, from the place that in almost all cases has seen them grow up. It was a special edition for several reasons. First, because it meant the return of this celebration that had to be canceled last year due to the health situation. But also because it could well be a historic event if the merger of Don Benito and Villanueva de la Serena is approved.
«We are going to be able to not lose any of our historical values, what we are going to do is history. We are going to give an example of collaboration and joint work”, said the mayor, José Luis Quintana during the opening speech of the awards.
But the real protagonists were going to be the winners this past Friday with one of the Alabán Awards that had Olga Parres as godmother. “It has always been a pleasure for me to come to Don Benito and I think I have a very special bond with this town,” said the tennis player from Ceuta, winner in singles and doubles of the last edition of the Don Benito City WTA Tournament.
The footballer Pedro Porro and the swimmer Amalia Sánchez-Miranda were, as the absolute best athletes, protagonists of a gala in which some of the winners could not attend, but wanted to be present through a video. Elsa Cañada and Joel Casado collected their prizes in the Sport and Future categories, the Judo Club Don Benito as the best team and Francisco Javier Sánchez as the best coach. In this edition, the event chosen by the jury as the most outstanding was the passage of La Vuelta through the town.
In addition, Claudia Rodríguez was recognized with the Sports and Inclusion award. As Sports Example, Alba Sánchez was awarded and in Sports and Revelation to the Víctor García kickboxing academy. The Praise Award for Minor Local Entities went to Rocío Lozano, at which time an emotional tribute was made with her family to Julián Lozano, who died just a year ago. Finally, Manuel Cabanillas was recognized with the Alabán del Deporte award.
Sansilvestre and Luis Casimiro
But the night also left some news from the mayor who announced that the town will recover the Sansilvestre Dombenitense in March, which could not be held due to the sixth wave of the pandemic. The high contagion figures at the end of the year forced the suspension of an appointment that, however, will finally be held on March 26.
It was not the only announcement made by Quintana who also announced that the new basketball court in the sports city will bear the name of Luis Casimiro who trained CB Don Benito in the 90s. The current coach of Coosur Real Betis will soon visit the town to inaugurate this court.
