The New York Yankees are getting ready for the free agent market once the MLB stoppage ends, with reinforcing the first base being a pending task and Anthony Rizzo, an old acquaintance, one of the options managed by general manager Brian Cashman.
Rizzo put up a .249/.340/.428 slash line with 8 home runs, 7 doubles and 21 RBIs in 2021 in a Yankees jersey, where he went on to wear a Chicago Cubs outfit for a decade.
The first baseman left a good impression in the Bronx, but it was expected that he would test the free agent market if he did not have a convincing proposal from the Yankees.
According to the specialized site Spotrac, Rizzo has a market value of 21.7 million dollars per year, being the third best first baseman available. A 4-year contract would give him $86.8 million, something that the Yankees could well pay if they don’t get into debt with another deal of great economic value, like the one with Carlos Correa, for example.
The Yankees know they need a first baseman, however, this is not a priority for the board, which is looking at how to strengthen the shortstop and the starting staff.
