Everyone at HSV had imagined it a little differently. Instead of starting the new year with a sense of achievement, there was only a 1-1 draw in Dresden at the start of the second half of the season. Bremen has directly overtaken Hamburg in the table, Schalke and Heidenheim can also pass on Sunday. A central question is now: Was it just a slip-up in Dresden? Or did the game also show that the squad still needs to be strengthened over the next two weeks?
Even though HSV was in the lead in Dresden for a long time and there were chances of a second goal, the equalizer for the home team was certainly not undeserved in the end. Dresden was ahead in shots on goal (19:10), the Saxons ran almost three kilometers more than the Hamburg team (120.2 kilometers against 117.5). And they also won 53 percent of the duels.

“It was collectively not enough,” explained coach Tim Walter, who experienced for the seventh time with HSV this season how a lead was gambled away. Why is that? Looking for the reason only in the goals conceded would certainly be the wrong approach. These will never be completely preventable. Overall, HSV still has the best defense in the second division with 19 goals conceded. Rather, the main problem lies in the game forward.
There are not enough alternatives in the HSV squad
Too little is made of one’s own possibilities. And that is partly a question of the quality and breadth of the squad. Sonny Kittel, Robert Glatzel, Faride Alidou, Ludovit Reis or Bakery Jatta can decide all games on a good day. On bad days, however, there aren’t enough alternatives in the squad to make up for it.

The HSV bosses still have a good two weeks to change that. The Dresden game showed once again that there is a need. And that increases the pressure. One thing is certain: Reinforcements are being sought for the outer track and for the center. It is clear that miracles cannot be expected in winter and also when looking at the financial situation.
