Cercle Bruges said goodbye to Yves Vanderhaeghe this season and appointed a new trainer with Dominik Thalhammer. According to the Association, Vanderhaeghe was not ‘modern enough’ and they chose the Austrian. Vanderhaeghe looks back on his resignation.
The supporters still fully supported Vanderhaeghe, but within the board he had fewer and fewer fans. According to chairman Vincent Goemaere, Vanderhaeghe dealt with the modern and scientific project at Cercle too difficult. “But what does the chairman have to say to Cercle”, Vanderhaeghe grins at Newspaper of West Flanders.
He does not agree that Vanderhaeghe is being criticized for being an old-fashioned trainer. “Am I an old-fashioned trainer? Absolutely not, I want to contradict the chairman 100 percent here”, the trainer sighs.
It turned out to be mainly technical director Carlos Avina who was not too big a fan of Vanderhaeghe. “Avina is a really nice guy, but he is more of a businessman than a football connoisseur.” And the timing of the dismissal is also bothering Vanderhaeghe. Just after a win. “Ah, who still fires a trainer who wins? I had the support of all of Belgium,” said the coach.
