Viktor Axelsen can for the second time in his career call himself Sports Name of the Year in Denmark. It is clear after he tonight won the prize at SPORT2021.
Olympic gold, five World Tour tournament victories in addition to the World Tour finals, recapture of first place in the world rankings, second places at All England and the European Championships and World Cup bronze with the men’s national team at the Thomas Cup in Aarhus.

2021 was a spectacular year for Viktor Axelsen, as the above is clear proof of.
The results also contribute to the 28-year-old fynbo becoming the winner of Denmark’s biggest sports award, Sports Name of the Year. The prize was awarded for the award-winning show SPORT2021, and here it was Axelsen’s name that came out of the envelope.
– Of course I am immensely proud and really happy to win the award. Not least because the other nominees have really achieved some incredible results in their sports in 2021. So that my achievements entitle me to the award, I see as a big pat on the back. I would like to thank all those who have cheered on me, supported me and inspired me in 2021. Now I put myself in the saddle that I can also make some good performances in 2022, says Viktor Axelsen.

The other nominees for Sports Name of the Year 2021 were Michael Mørkøv & Lasse Norman Hansen, as well as Anne-Marie Rindom.
Viktor Axelsen also won the award in 2017. In addition to Axelsen, only Mette Jacobsen (swimming), Tom Kristensen (motorsport) and Caroline Wozniacki (tennis) have won the Sports Name of the Year twice as an individual athlete. The women’s national handball team has won the award most times, which is three.
In December, Viktor Axelsen was also named BWF’s Men’s Player of the Year 2020/2021.
