Wijndal laughs after AZ cup victory: “Then Gözübüyük joked to me”

AZ went on to win against FC Twente on Wednesday evening, despite a striking moment before half-time: a goal by Jesper Karlsson was rejected, although afterwards it turned out that the Swede was meters behind the last line when he received the ball. Arbiter Serdar Gözübüyük saw that differently during the match, Owen Wijndal said with a laugh afterwards.

A long ball from AZ goalkeeper Peter Vindahl bounced behind the last line of FC Twente and Karlsson suddenly took him on the shoe, but was whistled back. Because there was no VAR, AZ had to accept this decision. Wijndal was told afterwards that there was no question of offside. “Oh, no offside, then Serdar joked to me,” the left-back told ESPN. “He said at halftime that it was offside.”

For a moment it seemed that this decision would have major consequences for AZ, which also fell behind shortly after the break. In the end, they still won 1-2. “A bit unhappy, but after that we straightened it out very well as a team. I think this is really a team victory, well deserved.”
