Without the reigning champion, this is the country in the last 16 of the 2021 African Cup of Nations

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations has concluded its group stage journey. Algeria as the defending champion was battered and these 16 countries qualified for the knockout phase.

Two matches in Group E took place simultaneously, namely Ivory Coast vs Algeria and Sierra Leon vs Equatorial Guinea. The duel took place on Thursday (20/1/2022) night WIB.

Ivory Coast beat Algeria at Douala Stadium with a score of 3-1. Patrice Beaumelle’s team led 3-0 through Franck Kessie (22′), Ibrahim Sangare (39′) and Nicolas Pepe (54′).

Algeria had received a penalty in the 60th minute. Riyad Mahrez, who advanced as the executor failed to score after the ball hit the post.

Algeria’s new goal was created in the 73rd minute through Sofiane Bendebka. Until the game is over, the score 3-1 lasts for the Ivory Coast’s victory.

Equatorial Guinea also managed to win over Sierra Leone 1-0 at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium. The winning goal was created in the 38th minute through Pablo Ganet Comitre.

This result made Ivory Coast to the last 16 as Group E winners Equatorial Guinea accompanied by runner-up status after collecting six points.

Algeria was hit hard. As the defending champions, they only sit at the bottom with one point and score one goal, under Sierra Leone with two points.

Group F sent three representatives to the last 16. Mali managed to win the group after beating Mauritania 2-0 at the Douala Stadium, Friday (21/1/2022) early morning WIB.

Gambia became runners-up after beating Tunisia 1-0 at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium. The winning goal was created in injury time through Ablie Jallow.

Mali won Group F with seven points. Gambia is in the runner-up position after losing on goal difference and Tunisia is entitled to advance after finishing third in the best three team standings.

Group A also sent three representatives to the knockout stages. Cameroon as the host won the group, Burkina Faso runner-up, and Cape Verde took the slot after topping the standings for the best three teams.

Group B has Senegal as group winners, Guinea runners-up, and Malawi qualify through the best third-placed team category. Group C sends Morocco, Gabon and Comoros. Group D includes Nigeria and Egypt.
