Women’s Tennis Blanks North Alabama in Season Opening Doubleheader

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss women’s tennis (2-0, 0-0 SEC) started the 2022 spring season with two lopsided victories versus the North Alabama Lions (0-4, 0-0 ASUN) at the William F. Galtney Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday.

The Rebels earned two dominant victories versus North Alabama, defeating the Lions 7-0 in the first match, and sweeping again, 4-0, in the second. The Rebels won both matches without losing a set in any match played.

Ole Miss and North Alabama played the first match in full, playing out all matches after the result of the match was decided. The two teams mutually agreed to play to clinch in both singles and doubles for the second match, resulting in the match being halted when the Rebels earned their fourth victory point. Ole Miss wrapped-up the win in the second match in just 1:30.

Zadori River and Kelsey Mize stood out for the Rebels in both matches. Zadori and Mize were the only Rebels on Sunday to win in both singles and doubles in both matches played. Mize partnered with Lillian Gabrielsen at No. 2 doubles and Zadori paired with Elysia Pool at the No. 3 position. Mize’s 6-3, 6-1 victory versus North Alabama’s Kalais Going clinched the second-match win for the Rebels at 4-0.

No. 80 sabina machalova earned two more singles victories on Sunday, both at the No. 1 spot for Ole Miss. The Senior improved her 2021-22 individual record to 12-5 overall, pacing in the Rebels in individual wins.

Anaëlle Leclercq-Ficher earned both a singles and doubles victory in her first collegiate dual. She started at both No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles in the first match of the day.

Ole Miss has now won its home opener three seasons in a row.

Up Next: Ole Miss travels to Atlanta next weekend to participate in ITA Kickoff Weekend action. The Rebels take on No. 14 Michigan in their opening matchup on Jan. 29. The winner of the Georgia Tech regional draw advances to the ITA National Indoor Championships.
