629 million euros. But what about Financial FairPlay?

629 million euros. But what about Financial FairPlay?

Who wouldn’t want to wear the Paris Saint-Germain shirt? The money that the French team pays every month is something incredible, surprising and beautiful. According to an article by the authoritative and respectable French newspaper “L’Equipe”, the annual salaries of the players of the Parisian club reach 629 million euros (of which 136 million in taxes). Out of a total of € 1.73 billion for all Ligue 1 clubs in total.

This means that the salaries of PSG players represent 37% of the total salaries of clubs in the French league.

Paris Saint-Germain, on the other hand, disputed the figures, citing € 585 million (including € 127 million in taxes) for all its employees and members, including handball players and judo athletes.

Certainly, regardless of the difference between the two sizes, the increase in recent seasons is dizzying. In 2018/19 the total salaries in Paris SG were 370 million euros, in 2019/20 they reached 414 million, and then reached 503 million the following year. To reach, a figure between the 585 million suggested by the club and the 629 million estimated by the newspaper “L’Equipe” for 2021/22.

On a national level, PSG has nothing to fear, as the owners of the Parisian club, Qatar Sports Investments, are always ready to “write off” losses in accordance with the requirements of the DNCG (National Department of Management Control).

At a European level, things are more complicated due to economic fair play, even if the Covid-19 pandemic has led UEFA to loosen the rules considerably. Clubs competing in UEFA competitions have the opportunity to halve the potential deficits recorded in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons and, therefore, Paris SZ is not threatened by possible UEFA sanctions.

It should be noted, however, that Financial Fair Play will be completely reformed from next season, with the very likely introduction of a “wage cap” as well as a “luxury tax”.
