The Donostiarras have led the game at all times and have enjoyed a maximum advantage of 20 points over Juaristi Iraurgi
Acunsa Gipuzkoa Basket won the derby this Sunday against Juaristi Iraurgi 80-70 in an intense and beautiful duel. The people from San Sebastian have led the game at all times and have enjoyed a maximum lead of 20 points, 69-49 in the third quarter. The speed of Aegir Steirnasson (18 points and five assists) and the wrist of Ben Simons (18 points, 16 in the first half with four triples), have unbalanced the balance for Lolo Encinas’ team. On the part of the urolatarras, they have been penalized by the lack of solidity of Hanzlik and Savkov, although they have relied on an excellent Iñigo Royo (20 points) and the transitions of Cissoko (18 points, four rebounds and three assists) to hurt the Gipuzkoa Basket’s defense and a sensational second half from Manex Ansorregi (11 points and five rebounds).
The atmosphere has been fantastic in the stands of Illunbe with more than 2,000 people and the response from the Gipuzkoan public, as expected, has been magnificent. During the break in the match, a sincere and endearing tribute was paid to Mikel Lekaroz, who has been in charge of the Guipuzcoan Basketball Federation for almost five decades.
Acunsa GBC took its first lead thanks to 18-6, which was stopped by Iñaki Jiménez after two triples and four points in a row from Mario Delas. Without a clear ‘five’, Juaristi has moved better with the energy of Iñigo Royo to lower the lead to seven points. However, Simons’ wrist unbalanced the match in the second half, which led the team from San Sebastian to go into the break with a sixteen-point lead, 51-35. Cissoko has taken a step forward for Juaristi, but the advantage has increased to twenty points, with the solidity of Ander Martínez for the locals, and the fourth ended with an eighteen advantage for Acunsa GBC. The warrior ardor of those led by Iñaki Jiménez tightened the match and the advantage has been diminishing and what could have seemed like a happy ending for GBC has not turned out that way, thanks to a partial 1-9 for Juaristi, which has been harangued and encouraged by the public of the region. The free throws and the fact of having a good lead helped Gipuzkoa basket, which closed the game from the free throw. Camaraderie and sincere greetings after the final honk and enormous applause from the stands for the players and coaching staff of their respective teams. GBC is installed among the first thanks to the victory, while Juaristi continues out of relegation.
