The first racket in the world rankings on Thursday, 4-6, 6-7 (4: 7), lost to Czech qualifier Jirzh Veselij (ATP 123).
Djokovic, who played in his first tournament after being expelled from Australia, will be replaced next week by Medvedev, the winner of the US Open Championship in Mexico, who will be the third Russian after Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safina to become the world’s number one.
Veselius, who had already defeated Djokovic in Monte Carlo in 2016, will meet Denis Shapovalov (WTA 14th) from Canada or Richard Beranka (WTA 99th) from Lithuania for the final place in the tournament.
The tournament takes place on hard surfaces.
Meanwhile, the world’s third racket in men’s tennis, Aleksandrs Zverevs from Germany, was fined for beating the referee’s promotion with a racket on Thursday after being disqualified from the Acapulco “ATP 500” tournament.
ATP said Zverev was fined $ 20,000 (approximately $ 17.8,000) for verbal abuse and another $ 20,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct.
“This is the maximum possible penalty for such violations,” the statement said, adding that Zverev would also be deprived of all the cash prize and ATP points he earned in the tournament.
It has already been reported that the incident took place after the first round match of the doubles, in which Zverev paired with Brazilian Marcel Mel with 2-6, 6-4, 6:10 in Lloyd Glaspoul from Great Britain and Finn Harry Heliovar.
During the match, Zverev repeatedly brutally knocked down the referee for what he thought were wrong decisions, but after the game he repeatedly beat his racket against the referee’s promotion while the referee was still there.

Zverev triumphed in the singles last year, beating Stefan Cicip from Greece in the final with 6-3, 7-6 (7: 3).
