Zavala Sets Sights on World Cup Glory in Cairo
Mexican sharpshooter Alejandra Zavala Vázquez is gearing up for her first international competition of the year, the Rifle and Pistol World Cup in Cairo, Egypt.The event, sanctioned by the International shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), will run from February 26th to March 8th, welcoming 504 athletes representing 60 nations.Zavala, a Rio 2016 Olympian who secured a commendable fourth-place finish in the women’s pistol event, will be competing in both the 10-meter and 25-meter pistol disciplines. After a rigorous training regimen in her home state of Jalisco, she arrived in Cairo last weekend to acclimate to the environment and fine-tune her skills ahead of the competition.
the World Cup comes amidst stringent health protocols implemented due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.Athletes have undergone thorough health checks to ensure a safe and secure environment for all participants.
The competition kicks off with an official opening ceremony on Saturday, february 26th. Following a technical meeting on Sunday, February 27th, the shooting events will commence and continue until Monday, March 7th.
This World Cup marks the beginning of Zavala’s competitive season, as she sets her sights on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. After missing out on the Tokyo 2020 Games,Zavala is resolute to make a strong showing in Paris and add to her impressive Olympic legacy.

Nancy: alejandra is an incredible talent, no doubt about it. Her performance at Rio was truly impressive,just missing out on a medal by a hair. That kind of resilience and determination at such a young age is truly commendable.

Nancy: They’re vital, honestly. It’s a testament to the dedication and perseverance of both the athletes and the governing bodies like the ISSF. These events provide a platform for athletes to push their limits, gain valuable experience, and demonstrate their skills on a global stage.
It’s also incredibly inspiring for young aspiring shooters to see their role models competing. and let’s be honest, we all need a bit of sporting action in our lives right now!
Moderator: I couldn’t agree more. Now, Alejandra is competing in both the 10-meter and 25-meter pistol disciplines. That’s no mean feat! What kind of mental and physical stamina does it require to compete at such a high level in multiple disciplines?
Nancy: It’s incredibly demanding. Each discipline requires a specific set of skills and mental focus. Mastering both requires immense discipline, rigorous training, and an unwavering dedication to the sport.
I know from personal experience that the mental fortitude required to remain calm under pressure and execute consistently is just as important as physical prowess.

Nancy: Never give up on your dreams.Believe in yourself and your abilities. Find a great coach, work hard, and always remember to enjoy the journey. The sport of shooting is incredibly demanding, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.
