“I regret having to give such news to our fans, but Rodion Amirov has been diagnosed with a brain tumor,” Maple Leafs general manager Kill Dubass was quoted as saying. “Rhodium spent this season on KHL‘s Salavat Yulaev, but was injured early in the season. Recovering from the injury, he developed new and unrelated symptoms that required additional medical examinations in previous months.”
Dubass said Amirov is currently receiving treatment in Germany and will not go to the pitch this season, but the Toronto club will continue to support him as much as possible and help provide the necessary medical care.
Amirov was selected in the first round of the 2020 draft with number 15. Amirov scored nine goals in the KHL 39 games last season and signed with Maple Leafs, but remained in Russia for another year to continue his growth. However, due to injuries this season, he has played very little and has not left the field since December.
The player himself said in an interview with Sportsnet that he was trying to maintain a positive attitude and did not want to receive special pity from others: “Many people suffer from serious illnesses. I want to set an example and give others hope.”
In an interview, Amirov thanked the clubs in Toronto and Ufa, not only for the medical care provided, but also for not disclosing his diagnosis until he had given his consent.
